Scuba Course Options
Scuba training at MidCoast Scuba Center allows you to
jumpstart your diving interests by continuing your training in a diving discipline of your choice, making you the diver you want to be.
After you have decided on the scuba course that meets your needs, personalize your training by choosing
one or more of the following course options
For example, be ready to record your dive memories and experiences to share with family and friends by
choosing the Digital Underwater Photography Option. Or choose the Dry Suit Option to stay warm and comfortable in a thin and flexible Dry Suit by choosing the Dry Suit Training Option.
Or choose to spend more time underwater and reduce risk by choosing the Enriched Air Diver Option, or choose all three or more options and finish your initial training as a scuba diver with all the knowledge and skills necessary to challenge any reef or diving type. To view a full description of each option, click on your choice of the Options listed below that interest you.
Example: Choosing Course Options
Below is a chart showing the progression of a diver taking simple scuba instruction:

The following course flow chart demonstrates a diver (let's call him Joe) enhancing his scuba instruction with the training options offered by MidCoast Scuba Center. First, Joe is a busy guy, so he chooses the On-Line Option for his Academic Course.
The On-Line Option allows Joe (who travels a lot for his job) to take the academic portion of his scuba lessons 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, at his own schedule (for more information on the On-Line Option please click here.

Joe also decides to increase is dive
knowledge and safety by becoming Enriched Air Certified and to learn
more about PDC's (Personal Dive Computers) by taking the PDC Specialist Option.
These are all fun academic workshops requiring only approximately 4 hours of
additional workshop time over the standard course.
For his Confined Water Training Joe chooses the Dry Suit Option as he gets cold easily, and plans to spend a lot of time stationary in the water taking photographs of the marine life he sees (therefore the Underwater Digital Photography Option is a second choice).
Joe's last chosen training option is the Rescue One Option. As he realizes diving most often takes place in remote areas, he wants to be able to assist and help his buddy should the need arise (in the unlikely event something goes awry during their diving activities. Joe also insists his buddy take this initial Rescue Training Option in case he should need any assistance or help himself)! You've got to hand it to Joe, he is one smart cookie!
Upon completion of his Open Water Training Joe the Diver has earned his Specialty Diver Certification by completing 2 Specialty courses (Enriched Air and PDC Specialist) and has a head start on his Advanced Diver (4 Specialty Courses and 24 Dives), and Master Diver (4 Specialty Courses and 50 Dives) certifications, not to mention his ability to enjoy his dives to the fullest with advanced education in his personal areas of interest!
As a MidCoast Scuba student you have multiple choices to personalize your training. Be like Joe, get the training that makes you the diver you want to be! Review the options listed, or talk to us at MidCoast Scuba Center, we will be happy to help you customize your scuba course to meet your needs.

Personal Dive Computer Specialist Option
The Computer Diver Specialist workshop, will teach you how to bring your dive planning, execution and safety into the 21st century! Although many instructors offer no more than cursory information on diving computers, the fact is their use has become mainstream for diving today. And they are not some new-fangled piece of dive kit either. The modern Personal Dive Computer (PDC) has been with us since before the late 1980's.

Modern Air-Integrated PDC
Modern Air-Integrated Hose-less PDC and Sending Transmitter
An additional workshop on Personal Dive Computers (PDC's) may be desired. Diving computers have become commonplace over the last 25 years, yet many divers lack the information on how PDC's may be used to increase their dive safety while allowing additional dive time.

Certification counts toward your Specialty Diver, Advanced Diver and Master Scuba Diver Ratings!
MidCoast Scuba Center offers you the option of being 'Enriched Air Ready' for your Evaluation Dives. Just upgrade to the Enriched Air Scuba Program. by signing up for the Enriched Air option with your scuba course you will save dollars and earn your first Specialty diver rating toward your Specialty Diver, Advanced Diver and Master Diver certifications. This is not a primer on Enriched Air but the full Enriched Air Diver Specialty Certification course.
Who should use Enriched Air? Any diver who
wants to increase the time they can spend underwater and that
is just about everybody and anybody! Enriched air is of particular benefit to
any diver who has elevated risk of Decompression Sickness such as smokers, older
divers, overweight divers, or anyone with an indicated medical history.
The MidCoast Scuba Center Enriched Air Course is a computer based course structured in an easy to understand manner by making use of a Enriched Air programmable computer (provided). The course covers the use of Enriched Air mixtures from 22 to 40 percent oxygen. Enriched Air as a breathing gas has a lot of benefits for both new and experienced. Among the benefits of using Enriched Air include:
Increased safety margins
Reduced post - dive fatigue
Extended no-decompression limits (more time diving)!
Faster safe-to-fly times
The air used in scuba is the same as you are breathing now, a mix of gasses, primarily Oxygen and Nitrogen, but highly filtered and dehydrated to prevent corrosion in the cylinders. Enriched Air is an optimum blend of these two breathing gasses for scuba use. Enriched Air is also known as 'Nitrox' (short for Nitrogen and Oxygen). Enriched Air has been used by scientific, commercial and military divers for over fifty years. About 1994 Enriched Air started to be used by recreational divers (you and me).
One of the primary topics in your scuba course will be how to keep Nitrogen within acceptable limits. When the acceptable limits are exceeded Decompression Sickness (DCS) is likely. You may have heard of DCS (or the 'bends') from TV shows or movies. Enriched Air raises Oxygen levels and lowers Nitrogen levels in the diver's cylinder.
Using Enriched Air provides many benefits to the diver. The most significant benefit is longer bottom times. For example, a diver using air is limited to approximately 40 minutes dive time at 60 feet. When using the proper Enriched Air that same diver can nearly double the time allowed.
Enriched air is the most requested continuing education program. Ninety five per cent of our scuba course graduates take our Enriched Air Specialty course, most right after certification. By signing up for the Enriched Air Scuba Option you can be 'Enriched Air Ready' plus save $25.00 and take your first step toward your Specialty Diver, Advanced Diver and Master Diver ratings!
Enriched Air Option Pricing and Savings
The Enriched Air Course is regularly $150.00. When you say you want to enroll in your scuba course and be 'Enriched Air Ready' you will save over $25.00 on your Enriched Air training. Your Open Water Scuba course will expand to include the text Enriched air Computer Diving, all Enriched Air teaching materials and the Enriched Air Use Practical Application and Oxygen analyzer workshops. Since ninety five percent of our scuba course graduates go on to take Enriched Air Training anyway, you are most assuredly saving money on this option.
