NIGHT / LIMITED VISIBILITY DIVER

The Night / Limited Visibility Diver Specialty course opens a whole new world to your diving. Whether day or night, limited visibility adds to the challenge, adventure and reward of diving.

Just because the visibility is limited, doesn't mean the opportunities are. The colorful nocturnal creatures glowing under a dive light create a spectacular, surreal combination. With limited visibility diving, your range of activities is unsurpassed, opening up new dive sites to explore in your own locale!

Learning about Night and Limited Visibility Diving is fun and convenient.

There are four requirements for becoming a comfortable and confident night and limited visibility diver: Knowledge, Skills, Equipment and Experience.

These are illustrated by the SSI Diver's Diamond shown here, and are addressed individually below.

If you think night diving looks fun, or if you want to be more comfortable in turbid water conditions, SS's Night / Limited visibility Diving is for you. The manual and video are packed with practical information about planning and conducting limited visibility dives for fun, adventure and exploration.

By following the directions below, you can study the academics at home, at your own pace, even if you are not enrolled in a course at this time.

SKILLS

Special Night and Limited Visibility Diving skills should be learned in the water, from an Instructor at a professional scuba school run by an SSI Authorized Dealer.

You'll learn and practice a variety of techniques, such as using specialized equipment, planning and conducting dives, buddy assistance and emergency situations - all in the open water under an Instructor's guidance and supervision.

You will learn the basics of:

  • Setting up shore lights at night
  • Having fun in turbid water
  • Holding light to maximize visibility
  • Locating the boat or shore
  • What to do if you lose sight of your buddy
  • What to do if your light goes out

Equipment

For comfortable and enjoyable Night and Limited Visibility diving, specialized equipment is necessary. Discover in-depth information on selection and use of specialized equipment. You will learn about the following equipment in the SSI Manual and Video:

  • Primary Lights and Secondary Lights

  • Strobe Lights and Surface Lights

  • Selection / Use / Maintenance

  • Lines for Night and Limited Visibility Diving

  • Compasses and their use for Limited Visibility

Experience

Diving experience is essential to becoming a comfortable, confident diver. To measure your experience, SSI has developed ten Levels of Experience based on various numbers of dives. For instance, Level 1 is 5 dives, Level 10 is 1000 dives.

Experience is also important in the SSI Education System. To qualify for SSI's Continuing Education Ratings you are required to have a certain Level of Experience, in addition to specialized Training.

Prerequisite Certification: Open Water Diver

Minimum age: 15

Certification counts toward your Specialty Diver, Advanced Diver and Master Scuba Diver Ratings!
