Beginning Scuba Instruction FAQ's

Scuba Diving is taught in 2 Parts

Part 1 Class and Confined Water

All SCUBA training is conducted in essentially the same manner.

Part 1 consists of both classroom/workshop and confined water training. Confined water is where you learn the skills to prepare you for Part 2 (the Open Water Evaluation Dives).

Part 2, The Open Water Evaluation Dives, are where you will demonstrate to the certifying instructor your comfort and ability to perform the skills you have learned. "Open Water" means diving in a lake or ocean.

While it is true that all scuba training is conducted in essentially the same manner, the difference among programs is how you get there.

We offer superior diving instruction with the most up-to-date training system available, Scuba Schools International! A major difference separating us from other programs is that you have the option to learn to dive using modern Air-Integrated Hose-less Personal Dive Computers (PDC's) for ultimate dive safety, Weight-Integrated back flotation buoyancy Compensators (BDC's) for ultimate comfort (no hip bruising weight belts), and streamlined 2-hose regulator systems.

Part 2 Open Water Evaluation Dives

As a MidCoast Scuba Center student you have three option for your evaluation dives.

Certi-Vacations

Certi-Vacations are the ideal way to complete your scuba training. Travel with us on a guided dive vacation and complete your training with your confined water and classroom instructor. Go to for current destinations.

Local Evaluation Dives

If you can not travel with us to more exotic "Certi-Vacation" destinations, local Evaluation Dives, (May through November) allow you to finish your training with your instructor. Private Open Water Evaluation dives are also available and scheduled for your convenience.

Referral Evaluation Dives

Referral Evaluation Dives are on your personal vacation with another instructor at a different scuba facility. A Refresher Course is required after 6 months and they must be completed within one year of initial training.

Scheduling

With today’s busy lifestyles you may think it impossible to find the time to learn to scuba dive. Nothing could be further from the truth. For your scheduling convenience MidCoast Scuba Center offers Home Study and weeknight or weekend classes. Our class format is modular, meaning you do not have to start and finish within certain class dates. You may take as little or as long as you need to prepare for your Open Water Evaluation Dives. Private classes are available. Feel free to talk to us about your scheduling needs.

Course Fees / Learn to Dive for Free!

The best way to learn to dive is in your own Total Diving System equipment, giving you greater familiarity with your diving gear. Base course price may be waived when purchasing a Total Diving System “package” of equipment. In other words we will teach you to dive in your own equipment for free!

Please call for current course rates and fees.

Other course fee specials may be available. Private instruction, 1-2 students is available as is semi-private instruction 3-4 students at a rate adjusted for higher pool rental costs.

Equipment Needs

You will need personal fit, personal snorkeling system equipment for the confined water sessions. A Personal Snorkeling System consists of scuba quality face mask, snorkel (preferably a dry snorkel to eliminate water intake), open-heel adjustable fins, wetsuit boots and a mesh carry / rinse bag. Personal mouthpieces may be desired.

Equipment Provided

Once you have signed up for class and picked up your teaching materials, we will schedule a convenient time for you to be fitted with the provided training equipment for your confined water dives. At that time we can help you fit and choose your Personal Snorkeling System.

Please stop by and let us introduce ourselves to you! We will be happy to show you the type of teaching equipment you will be using for your training. It is state-of-the-art and unmatched by any training center around! Our teaching equipment is also available for rental on your next diving vacation. Ask how you can get a full rental refund!

We hope you that you will join us in this great adventure! I look forward to meeting you soon! Don’t wait to join in the fun!

Sincerely,

Terry Hurley
